Arrival At Hospital

Proceed directly to level 2 where you will be admitted by our welcoming and experienced reception staff. Be aware that patients requiring a wheelchair can request one at the patient drop-off zone.

Be sure to bring with you any relevant cards and forms. You will be greeted by one of our friendly professional nurses who will admit you to the unit, answer any questions you may have, and prepare you for theatre. This is also a very good time:

  • To alert staff of any special dietary needs so appropriate arrangements can be made for your post-procedure snack
  • To alert staff if you anticipate any difficulties with transport or arrangements for your at-home care for 24 hours after being discharged from hospital
  • For drivers to make prior arrangements with Day Surgery staff to call them (don’t forget to leave a contact name and number) when a patient is ready to be collected.
After Surgery

You will return to DSU for about 1½ - 2 hours to recover. During your stay in DSU, drivers awaiting a short stay patient are invited to avail themselves of the facilities in the Deck Café on the Ground Floor.

For patients whose stay is longer, staff will contact the driver on your return to DSU and nominate a time for you to be collected. This will allow the driver time to coordinate his/her arrival at the pick-up zone where you will be waiting. Wheelchairs will be available.

During the recovery period you will be given something to eat and drink. Your surgeon may visit and talk to you after surgery. Nursing staff will explain your discharge instructions. When completed, you will be ready to go home. And, don’t forget to take with you any X-rays that you may have brought with you.

The Next Day

Following your surgery staff will ring you next day to find out how you are and answer any questions you may have. If staff cannot contact you they will post a card.

The Staff of the Day Surgery Unit take pride in providing professional, competent and compassionate care to our patients and will welcome your written feedback about how we can improve our service.

We Hope Your Stay With Us Is A Comfortable One
And We Wish You A Speedy Return To Good Health
